Cultural Heritage Salvage Group

Cultural Heritage Salvage Group (CHSG) was established in 1998. Main activities are related with cultural and natural heritage:

Archaeological and historical researches

Professional historians and archaeologists do researches all over the territory of Lithuania. Statistics: CHSG has already carried out rescue archaeological excavations and historical researches in 20 archaeological sites and ancient churches in Lithuania. Archaeologists-divers of CHSG have already surveyed 7 lakes of East Lithuania. In 2002 CHSG completed research and assessment of the destruction factors of archaeological sites. Most substantial historical researches were carried out in 1998-1999 - project “Pilaite manor” – buildings of Pilaite manor (18th-19th) in Vilnius were documented and 2001-2002 - project “The Power of Water” – water mills in East Lithuania were documented and inventoried and the database was created.

Currently CHSG is implementing research of the impact of plough to the archaeological site in Seredzius and re-vegetation experiment.

Stabilization of archaeological sites

CHSG works on the slowing up or stopping the erosion of archaeological sites by using different measures: regulating of green plantation, strengthening of slopes, building of paths, stairs, bridges, etc.

Regulation of green plantation in the sites of cultural heritage
Most Lithuanian archaeological and historical sites such as hill-forts, cemeteries and other burial places and parks are overgrown by bushes, trees, etc. Plants are not desirable because their roots destroy cultural layers of sites; trees and bushes affect the stability of hill-forts' surface by obstructing the light needful for formation of the turf. Statistics: CHSG has already carried out the regulation of green plantation in 12 sites of cultural heritage.

Stabilization of eroded hill-forts' slopes
Many hill-forts in Lithuania are neglected or damaged and need a lot of efforts and means to make them inviting and attractive. CHSG works on the slowing up or even stopping the erosion of hill-forts by using different measures: by promoting the site (setting of explanatory and illustrative boards, building of paths, stairs, bridges, etc.), regulating of green plantation, strengthening of hill-forts' slopes. Statistics: CHSG has already carried out the stabilization of slopes in 14 hill-forts.

Promotion of heritage

The Museum of the Ancient Instruments and Machinery

Info-boards

1999-2002 CHSG has designed explanatory and illustrative info-boards, which give to the public information about archaeological sites. Such boards are already placed in all national and regional parks in Lithuania.

Searching for partnership

CHSG is very interested to create a network of international partnership for projects, which need partnership.

If you're interested to create a network of partnership with the CHSG or if you already have any partner in Europe and ideas for European projects and believe that CHSG have a role in it, please contact:
